Protests resume after 80 arrests in St. Louis unrest
ST. LOUIS (AP) — A racially mixed crowd of demonstrators locked arms and marched quietly through downtown St. Louis Monday morning to protest the acquittal of a white former police officer in the killing of a black suspect, following another night of unrest and more than 80 arrests.
The latest action follows three days of peaceful protests and three nights of vandalism and unrest in the city that has been rocked since Friday, when a judge announced he found Jason Stockley not guilty in the 2011 death of Anthony Lamar Smith.
Hundreds of riot police mobilized downtown late Sunday, arresting more than 80 people and seizing weapons amid reports of property damage and vandalism. The arrests came after demonstrators ignored orders to disperse, police said.
“I’m proud to tell you the city of St. Louis is safe and the police owned tonight,” Interim Police Chief Lawrence O’Toole said at a news conference early Monday.
Earlier Sunday, more than 1,000 people had gathered at police headquarters then marched without trouble through downtown St. Louis, the posh Central West End, and the trendy Delmar Loop area of nearby University City. Protesters also marched through two shopping malls in a wealthy area of St. Louis County.
By nightfall, most had gone home. The 100 or so people who remained grew increasingly agitated as they marched back toward downtown. Along the way, they knocked over planters, broke windows at a few shops and hotels, and scattered plastic chairs at an outdoor venue.
According to police, the demonstrators then sprayed bottles with an unknown substance on officers.
One officer suffered a leg injury and was taken to a hospital. His condition wasn’t known.
Soon afterward, buses brought in additional officers in riot gear, and police scoured downtown deep into the night, making arrests and seizing at least five weapons, according to O’Toole. Later, officers in riot gear gathered alongside a city boulevard chanting “whose street, our street” — a common refrain used by the protesters — after clearing the street of demonstrators and onlookers.
“We’re in control. This is our city and we’re going to protect it,” O’Toole said.
Mayor Lyda Krewson said at the same Monday news conference that “the days have been calm and the nights have been destructive” and that “destruction cannot be tolerated.”
Early Monday, more than 150 protesters marched arm-in-arm, some carrying signs, to city hall. Police turned traffic away as the marchers blocked a busy St. Louis street during the rush hour crush. Once at city hall, they found their voices, chanting: “I know that we will win.” The protesters then marched four blocks to a city court building, where they chanted again, then dispersed. The next protest is scheduled for Monday evening in University City.
Also Monday, high school students in at least two suburban districts protested the Stockley ruling. In Kirkwood, about 100 students walked out and held a brief rally, while 250 students in Webster Groves staged what school officials described as a peaceful demonstration.
The recent St. Louis protests follow a pattern seen since the August 2014 killing of Michael Brown in nearby Ferguson: The majority of demonstrators, though angry, are law-abiding. But as the night wears on, a subsection emerges, a different crowd more willing to confront police, sometimes to the point of clashes.
Protest organizer Anthony Bell said he understands why some act out: While change can come through peaceful protests, such as those led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., years of oppression has caused some to turn violent.
“I do not say the (unruly) demonstrators are wrong, but I believe peaceful demonstrations are the best,” Bell said.
Many protesters believe police provoked demonstrators by showing up in riot gear and armored vehicles; police said they had no choice but to protect themselves once protesters started throwing things at them.
Stockley shot Smith after high-speed chase as officers tried to arrest Smith and his partner in a suspected drug deal.
Stockley, 36, testified he felt endangered because he saw Smith holding a silver revolver when Smith backed his car toward the officers and sped away.
Prosecutors said Stockley planted a gun in Smith’s car after the shooting. The officer’s DNA was on the weapon but Smith’s wasn’t. Dashcam video from Stockley’s cruiser recorded him saying he was “going to kill this (expletive).” Less than a minute later, he shot Smith five times.
Stockley’s lawyer dismissed the comment as “human emotions” during a dangerous pursuit. St. Louis Circuit Judge Timothy Wilson, who said prosecutors didn’t prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Stockley murdered Smith, said the statement could be ambiguous.
Stockley left the police department and moved to Houston three years ago.
Because I don’t see the point to put your nose in somebody else’s business when it was it your business to begin with see that’s the thing in society today and then our world people don’t know when to keep their nose out of somebody else’s business when it don’t involve your family or someone that you’re affiliated with I’m pretty well sure all those protesters that is protesting are not related to the deceased black man that was killed if so please show me DNA proof that they are related because in the South it seems like wild fires are spreading faster than cancer or the plague disease just because everybody wants to protest over the Confederate flag over and over the Confederate Monuments or someone being killed by a cop or over that people are tired of seeing protesting are you do you see Native Americans protesting for wanting their land back no you do not because this land is the Native Americans and my Native American ancestors this land is there’s nobody but there’s I’m tired of all these protesters because they’re all ignorant because purchase something this well where was you at when they got shot or killed you’re sitting at home watching the TV and that was it or sitting behind your computer screen typing that was it you wasn’t there when the person got murdered or killed but you don’t mind going protest and over matters like this that is nonsense that’s what’s wrong with this world today because people will not mind her own business that’s reason why we have so much turmoil that’s reason why our country is going straight to hell in a handbasket faster than you can say kiss my ass and you’re spreading this to the young youth like my children know my children don’t need to know stupid mess like protesting because it’s nonsense as everybody’s history is being stripped away just because people don’t like this and don’t like that okay if y’all want to remove the Confederate monuments and statues and everything well it’s about time that the Confederacy steps up and has the African-American monuments stripped and took down because it might offend Native Americans it might offend white people it might be being pushed in their faces every day to one side is not correct over the other then if you want to talk about the incident that happened in Charlottesville West Virginia well the protesters that had a permit and the one’s that did not have a permit to be there when the White lives matter group was there or as y’all say Nazi and KKK they had permits to be there the other people did not so they should have been at home but they come to interfere and run their mouth like always We Appreciate You black lives matter you’re destroying our country and trying to take it over and make it yours and the thing about it is or it will never be yours now I’m sick and tired of being nice I’m tired of writing nice beautiful things now I’m speaking what’s on my mind which is my own personal opinion and no I’m not racist I’m just tired of all the protests and because it’s my kid’s are getting jumped on as my husband has to put up with stuff like this dealing with his job and everything I’m tired of hearing it all so they’re dead you can’t bring them back as a little smart-ass on this site has said to me and you should be over things like that show me the cop moved away from St Louis more than 3 years ago that still you want to protest in St Louis because he got off on all charges of murder when it’s none of your business to begin with she has to think about it everybody wants to put their nose in business that doesn’t concern you you know and it’s sort of this is a touchy subject with me because you know my father was killed by least 70 men and most of those men were African American just only a few were white and then the people that killed my father in 1988 got off scot-free but some of them couldn’t live with the after-effects of killing my father by beating his nose into his school and killing him instantly as his children looked on from the station wagon as my dad hollered and told everybody to leave and get out of there before they ended up dead 2 so yes this is a touchy subject with me always will be people can say I’m racist that I’m prejudiced that I’m a bigot I don’t care because I am not I just voice my opinion with if you like it and what if you don’t because here lately I have been judged for things that I have not done and quite frankly I do not like it from a little asshole on this site and the last time I checked up under the United States of America and under the Constitution for which it stands we all have civil rights each and everyone of us do and a lot of our civil rights are being violated every day just like at little sick ass hole on this site is violating my rights plus my family’s rights but as long as he can have a good day at the end I guess that’s all that matters and I guess so the people that is protesting as long as they’re having a good day at the end of the day I guess that’s all that matters when it’s not their business to be putting their nose into maybe one day they will mind their own business and taking care of their family and do what they’re supposed to do and get educated because apparently with him being out here protesting an educated and then they have all this free time do they not work yes everybody has swing shifts meaning 1st 2nd and 3rd Shift or you know but they’re all time out here protesting over stuff that does not concern them is me and my family protesting no we don’t believe in that because our country’s already messed up bad enough without being out here protesting and trying to overtake the world and just because you wanted to destroy history I mean come on get a life wake up quit being so dumbfounded the only thing I can say now is get a life mind your own business keep your nose to yourself and I’m pretty sure that everybody in the United States of America will have a good day stop all this nonsense about protesting stop all this stuff about racism stop all your bigotry stop all of your judgemental stuff against people when you do not know nothing about them me I’m voicing my opinion weather you like it or not because I haven’t done so since being on this site my husband’s done so but you know what it’s time that I speak up and say something cuz I’m tired of seeing this mess in the news media when they could be reporting something much better
